One of the big changes discovered in the latest iPhone 3.1 Beta released tonight was that it seems to disable tethering hacks for AT&T customers in the U.S.

Shortly after the release of the 3.0 firmware, however, several hacks began circulating allowing U.S. AT&T customers to unofficially enable tethering on their iPhones. The latest beta firmware, however, seems to disable this functionality.

EXCLUSIVE: We originally brought you the story last month stating MMS and tethering would be coming in July. AT&T responded directly to our story and stated it would be delayed. Well those stories are true as MMS and tethering are now coming in September. The controversy over tethering pricing remains the same. Tethering for iPhone will cost $55 on top of the current iPhone data plans.

MMS will be included with the current text messaging plans.

There you have it folks.

Update:

Looks like it will not be 55 dollars via AT&T on Facebook

TETHERING

There are a lot of reports out there, but wanted you guys to know that rumors of $55 tethering plan on top of an unlimited data plan are false. We’ll have more news to share when the iPhone tethering option is closer to launch.

I have seen a lot of people ask how to enable tethering on their iPhone on AT&T.  I found an article about a month ago that explained how to do it, but I am not able to find it anymore so I thought I would post up a step by step on how to enable tethering on the iPhone.

Disclaimer – Neither ATi nor I take any responsibility for any problems, issues, bricking/etc. that may occur while using this software to modify your iPhone.

Tethering Process:

Visit help.benm.at from you iPhone

Tethering Step 1

Tethering Step 1

Scroll down to MobileConfigs:

Tethering Step 2

Tethering Step 2

After selecting MobileConfigs select your country:

Tethering Step 3

Tethering Step 3

Select your carrier:

Tethering Step 4

Tethering Step 4

Click on install:

Tethering Step 5

Tethering Step 5

It will confirm that you want to install (in my case it asked me if I wanted to replace since I have already installed this MobileConfig):

Tethering Step 6

Tethering Step 6

You will see that it is installing the MobileConfig:

Tethering Step 7

Tethering Step 7

Now you should see a confirmation of the install:

Tethering Step 8

Tethering Step 8

Click done and you should now be able to tether your iPhone. You might need to restart your iPhone for the settings to take effect.
