8GB 3GS Coming Soon?

According to a photo at the Boy Genius Report, a service provider in Canada called Rogers has launched the iPhone 3GS in 8GB form. From the looks of things, this appears to be very, very legit and also very, very feasible given the lifespan of the iPhone 3G.

Rogers also goes on to state that they will be reducing their 3G inventory which means that it will eventually be phased out in favor of the 3GS 8GB. Of course there is absolutely no pricing listed in the internal memo which is frustrating to say the least.

Google Voice Mobile is now available for free. It used to cost $2.99 on the App Store, the only problem is where and how to install Google Voice Mobile when it is no longer available on the App Store.

The solution? In order to grab GV Mobile, launch Cydia on your jailbroken iPhone and search for GV Mobile. Yes, you need to jail break your iPhone.

Update – Neal from the comments pointed this out:

You can use Google Voice without Jailbreaking – http://www.intoyourheadpodcast.com/blogpressexperiment/?p=478

The FCC asks Apple specifically if any approved VoIP apps are allowed to be used over AT&T’s 3G network, and more generally what are the “standards for considering and approving iPhone applications” and more details into the approval process. It also asks for the contact information of all developers of rejected Google Voice apps, presumably for further investigation. In the Google letter, it seems to be asking if Voice will be able to be utilized in any capacity over the web, without inclusion in the iTunes store. Unsurprisingly, a number of questions to Apple and AT&T concern the carrier’s involvement in which apps or types of apps get rejected. All companies have until August 21st to respond and can request confidentiality on all or portions of their response.

There are a bunch of iPhone keypad codes that you can type in and get back certain information about the your mobile carrier, phone and billing details.

To use any one of these codes, open your iPhone’s “phone app” and make sure that the keypad button is selected in the bottom menu. Then, type in the code from the list below and press call.

iPhone Codes: Network & Phone Information

*3001#12345#*- Opens up the “Field Test” settings on your iPhone, which allows you to see many, many advanced network settings on your phone including cell site information and more.

*#06# – Displays your iPhone’s International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number (this code also works on many other phones).

*#21# – Displays any call forwarding settings enabled on your iPhone.

*#43# – Shows you if call waiting for various parts of your phone are either enabled or disabled.

*#30# – Shows you if you have the call presentation (to see who is calling you) setting enabled or disabled.

*#33# – Displays call barring settings for your iPhone, and weather they are enabled or disabled.

iPhone Codes: Carrier & Billing Information

*646# -View available minutes on your AT&T plan (*min#).

*777#- View available minutes on your AT&T pre-paid plan (if you get the “Account Not Found” error, you do not have a pre-paid account and you should try the code just above this one for postpaid accounts).

*3282# - View wireless data usage statistics (also *data#).

*225# – Check the bill balance on your AT&T account (also *bll#).

*729 – Makes a call to AT&T to pay your wireless bill.

The company has begun sending out more detailed messages to some of the frustrated customers who have been voicing their complaints. The message below was written by Glenn Lurie, AT&T’s President of Emerging Devices and Resale.

Your letter concerning Apple’s decision on the Google Voice iPhone app was forwarded to me since I work closely with Apple.

While we’re very proud to offer the iPhone 3GS along with the thousands of apps available through the App Store, AT&T does not manage the App Store – and we are not involved in the approval process for apps in the App Store. I recommend in this particular case that you express your concerns to Apple.

I’m glad you’re enjoying your iPhone and hope that you continue to be an AT&T customer. We appreciate and value your business.

Sincerely,
Glenn Lurie

AT&T’s stance is no longer that it can’t talk about the App Store — it’s that it doesn’t manage the App Store, and that any concerns about this case should be directed at Apple. Of course, the note leaves plenty of wiggle room for AT&T.

UPDATED

I have seen a lot of people ask how to enable MMS on their iPhone on AT&T.  I found an article awhile ago that explained how to do it, but I am not able to find it anymore so I thought I would post up a step by step on how to enable MMS on the iPhone.  This is how I got the option to send MMS.  I am still unable to send MMS even though some have been successful.

Disclaimer – Neither ATi nor I take any responsibility for any problems, issues, bricking/etc. that may occur while using this software to modify your iPhone.

MMS Process:

You will need the following:

August brought this to my attention, you can load a custom IPCC file with the current iTunes if you run these commands

MAC:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

WINDOWS:
“%ProgramFiles%\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

APN Settings:

  • APN: wap.cingular
  • User: wap@cingulargprs.com
  • pw: CINGULAR1
  • MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com
  • Proxy: 66.209.11.32
  1. Upgrade your iPhone to OS 3.0 if you haven’t already using your current iTunes program – do the complete upgrade process.
  2. Uninstall iTunes from your PC
  3. Reboot PC
  4. Install iTunes 8.2.0.10
  5. Run iTunes and select your iPhone. Hold Shift and press “Update”. Using the open box, navigate to where you saved the ATT_US file and select it. It will say “Updating Carrier Settings”.
  6. Reboot your iPhone
  7. Open SMS and send your first picture message =)

Note:  The reason you reinstall a different version of iTunes is because it’s a “Pre-Release” version which allows you to load custom .ipcc files, whereas in the standard iTunes version you can’t do this.  Also you reboot your PC after uninstalling iTunes to ensure all changes take effect to your PC and you’re able to give a fresh install of PR iTunes.

If you have playlists, videos, etc – I recommend doing this on a different machine than your primary machine because it’s easier than saving and restoring all your information.

The iPhone 3G 8GB Refurb is now only $49. It is the only iPhone 3G currently available as a refurbished phone, as AT&T has sold out of the 16GB model.

AT&T notes that supplies are limited, and they expect to sell out soon. You can buy one at the link below.

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless said Friday it added 1.1 million net customers for its second quarter, which is behind rival AT&T (NYSE: T)’s subscriber growth for the same period.Verizon released its subscriber numbers before its quarterly earnings announcement, which will be issued Monday, and one day after AT&T reported a strong second quarter with 1.4 million new customers. Verizon is still the largest U.S. carrier with 87.7 million customers, but it is facing increased competition in the high-end and low-end markets.

Apple’s iPhone 3GS had a successful launch during the second quarter, and it sold over a million units worldwide during its debut weekend. While not all of these were for AT&T, the iPhone has proven to be capable of poaching high-spending customers away from Verizon, Sprint Nextel, and T-Mobile. AT&T said it activated 2.4 million iPhones in the quarter, and more than two-thirds of its new subscribers came for Apple’s touch-screen smartphone.

HeadsUp is a great app for remembering birthdays, anniversaries, events and holidays. The cleanliness of the user interface is what makes this app amazing. One thing about this app which makes it a unique from others is the zodiac sign feature. Another great feature is importing birthdays from your contacts. Even though, this app is $0.99 it is completely worth it if you want a easy to use reminder.

At Google, we want to make searching the world around you as easy and informative as searching the web. That’s why we’re introducing Search with My Location for iPhone 3.0. Now if I want to know which jazz clubs are near me, I don’t have to specify a location – I just search for “jazz clubs”.

As always, your privacy is one of our top concerns. Google won’t use your location in search unless you explicitly opt in. And you can always disable the feature from Preferences at the bottom of the homepage.

Search with My Location from Safari is available in English in the US and UK. Look for other country and language combinations soon. You can also search with My Location using Google Mobile App, available from the iPhone App Store.
